TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) has projected a continued growth in retail sales for March 2025, with the Real Retail Sales Index (IPR) expected to reach 236.7, a year-on-year increase of 0.5 percent.
"The performance of retail sales is mainly supported by the growth in spare parts and accessories, cultural and recreational goods, as well as food, beverages, and tobacco," said the Executive Director of BI's Communication Department, Ramdan Denny Prakoso, in a written statement on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.
On a month-on-month basis, retail sales in March 2025 are anticipated to surge by 8.3 percent, a significant increase from the previous month. Most sectors are expected to see growth, particularly information and communication equipment, food, beverages, tobacco, and clothing.
"This surge aligns with the rise in demand during Ramadan and the Eid al-Fitr holidays, coupled with retailers' discount strategies," stated Ramdan.
In February 2025, the IPR stood at 218.5, marking a 2.0 percent year-on-year growth, up from January's 0.5 percent. This increase was mainly fueled by strong performance in cultural and recreational goods, motor vehicle fuel, and clothing.
February also saw a 3.3 percent month-on-month rise in retail sales, a recovery from January's 4.7 percent contraction. Key contributors to this growth were clothing, food, beverages, tobacco, and motor vehicle fuel, reflecting increased consumer activity leading up to Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr.
In terms of prices, the central bank anticipates a decrease in inflation pressure within the next three months (May 2025), while the pressure in the subsequent three months (August 2025) is expected to remain relatively stable.
Ramdan noted that this outlook is reflected in the General Price Expectations Index (IEH), which is projected to be 148.3 in May 2025 (down from 159.6) and 155.5 in August 2025 (stable compared to the previous 155.4).
