TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminds fishermen and captains of passenger ships about the possibility of high waves in several domestic water routes. This early warning is valid until December 17, 2024.

Referring to the official statement released by BMKG on Saturday morning, December 14, 2024, the movement of wind and waves at sea is influenced by cyclone seeds 93S in the Indian Ocean south of Java, moving southwest. This condition can cause sea waves up to 4 meters high.

"Likely to occur in the Indian Ocean west of Aceh-Lampung and the Indian Ocean south of Banten-Bali," according to the early warning.

Wind patterns in the northern part of Indonesia generally move from northwest to northeast at speeds around 8-30 knots, whereas in the southern area, the wind moves in the opposite direction. The highest wind speeds are observed in the Indian Ocean west of Lampung to south of Banten, Karimata Strait, Java Sea, southern part of Makassar Strait, Sulawesi Sea, and Arafura Sea.

In addition to 4-meters high waves, there is also an early warning about 2.5-meter high sea waves in the northern Malacca Strait, North Natuna Sea, western and southern Sunda Strait, Java Sea, as well as the central-southern part of Makassar Strait.

Similar indications are also found in the Indian Ocean south of Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi Sea, Banda Sea, Halmahera Sea, Molucca Sea, Arafura Sea, and North Pacific Ocean Maluku-Papua.

"The potential for high waves in several regions poses a risk to navigation safety," stated the official BMKG statement.

Fishermen are advised to be cautious of wind speeds over 15 knots and wave heights above 1.25 meters. Barges should also be cautious of winds exceeding 16 knots and wave heights above 1.5 meters.

There are also advisories for ferry boats to watch for wind speeds over 21 knots and wave heights above 2.5 meters. Captains of large fleet sizes, such as cargo ships and cruise ships, should pay attention to winds over 27 knots and wave heights above 4 meters.
