TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG said the flooding in South Jakarta on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, was also caused by heavy rains in Bogor City. Ida Pramuwardani, head of BMKG's weather forecast and early warning team, said that water from Bogor caused the Krukut River in South Jakarta to overflow.
However, rainy conditions in Jakarta on the same day also contribute to the overflowing river. "Contributing to the increase in water discharge in Jakarta's Krukut River, considering the flow of water from Bogor to Jakarta through connected river basins, coupled with the high intensity of rain in Jakarta itself," said Ida when contacted on Thursday, November 21, 2024.
She mentioned that the rainfall in Jakarta and Bogor last Tuesday was recorded as extremely heavy, namely 113 millimeters per day in South Jakarta and 109.5 millimeters per day in Bogor City. The effects were flooding in Sentra Kuliner, Malabar, Bogor City, and fallen trees in South Jakarta.
Based on the analysis of atmospheric dynamics, Ida said, a convergence area and wind diversion were observed in the western and northern parts of Jakarta during the day and afternoon. Meanwhile, the atmospheric instability index indicates an unstable condition with moderate to strong convective potential.
"As a result, areas in Bogor and southern Jakarta experienced heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds from noon to afternoon," she said.
Earlier, the Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) recorded flooding in South Jakarta and West Jakarta on Tuesday afternoon. The head of BPBD Jakarta, Isnawa Adji, said the floodwaters had reached 1-meter-high.
"In West Jakarta, the water level was 60 to 100 centimeters, while in South Jakarta, the water level reached 140 centimeters," Isnawa said in his written statement on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
The flooding in West Jakarta was caused by heavy rains. Meanwhile, the flooding in South Jakarta was also caused by heavy rains combined with the overflow of the Krukut River.
