BMKG Says West Java Records 98 Earthquakes in February 2025

TEMPO.CO, BandungThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a total of 98 earthquakes in West Java last month, with most categorized as shallow ones with depth less than 60 kilometers.

According to the Head of the BMKG Geophysical Station in Bandung, Teguh Rahayu, the other nine earthquakes are categorized as medium quakes, with depths ranging from 60 to 300 kilometers. He stated through a written release on Monday, March 3, 2025, “The largest recorded earthquake had a magnitude of 4.5, while the smallest was recorded at 1.1 magnitude."

As many as 51 quakes occurred offshore, while 47 were on land. Throughout February 2025, the West Java region recorded eight felt earthquakes, one of which occurred in the evening of February 20, 2025. The 4.5-magnitude tremor was centered at 7.59 degrees South Latitude and 106.18 degrees East Longitude, with a depth of 26 kilometers.

The earthquake was felt in Ciracap, with an intensity scale of III MMI, in Sukabumi II-III MMI, and in Cidolog, Pelabuhan Ratu II MMI. The vibrations of the tremor were felt by some people inside their houses, akin to a truck passing by.

In addition, the BMKG Geophysical Station in Bandung also recorded 385,980 lightning strikes in the region throughout February 2025.

The lightning activity during that period indicated that the fourth week of February 2025 had the highest CG (-) lightning activity at 100,199 occurrences. The highest CG(+) lightning activity also occurred in the fourth week at 57,836 occurrences.

Throughout February, the highest lightning occurrences were recorded in the fourth week at 158,035 occurrences, and the lowest number of lightning strikes occurred in the first week at 9,459 times. Based on the lightning occurrence data obtained, the regions with the highest number of lightning strikes were Sumedang Regency, Subang Regency, and Majalengka Regency.
