TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A group of large Canadian news media, including CBC/Radio-Canada, Postmedia, Metroland, Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, and Canadian Press, have jointly launched a lawsuit against the creator of ChatGPT, OpenAI, for copyright infringement.
The lawsuit was filed in the Ontario Superior Court on Friday morning, November 30, 2024. In their claim, they are seeking damages from OpenAI, as well as payment for the profits the company has gained from using news articles from these media organizations.
They also seek a court decision to prohibit OpenAI from using their news articles in the future.
In a joint statement, the companies wrote, "OpenAI has leveraged and profited from the use of this content, without permission or compensation to the content owners," wrote the joint statement from Canadian media quoted by CBC News.
An OpenAI spokesperson stated that the company's models are trained on publicly available data and noted that the company is "anchored" in international copyright principles.
"We work closely with news publishers, including in displaying, attributing, and linking to their content in ChatGPT searches, and offer them ways to easily opt out if they choose," OpenAI wrote to CBC News.
In late December 2023, The New York Times filed a lawsuit against the tech company. At that time, OpenAI stated that they respect creators' rights and content owners and are committed to collaborating with them to ensure they benefit from AI technology and new revenue models.
The New York lawsuit against OpenAI for copyright infringement is still ongoing.
