TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Elementary and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen) Abdul Mu'ti, said that subjects coding and artificial intelligence (AI) will be integrated into the elementary school curriculum in the upcoming academic year.
"To be implemented starting from the academic year 2025/2026 as an elective subject," said Mu'ti when contacted via WhatsApp on Thursday, November 14, 2024.
Mu'ti stated the plan for the information technology-based subjects would begin from the fourth grade of elementary school. "Depends on the school's ability and the children," he added.
In finalizing these subjects, Mu'ti mentioned that the Ministry of Education is currently studying the teaching models and materials from schools that have already implemented them.
Regarding the limitation of technology access such as notebooks as a supporting tool, Mu'ti has not provided a solution regarding the facilities support from the ministry. However, he stated that the subjects are not mandatory. "Only those who are ready will implement them," he said.
Mu'ti hopes that the implementation of subjects at an early stage will enable children in Indonesia to have digital capabilities and intelligence.
Furthermore, Abdul Mu'ti's steps in organizing coding and AI as subjects for elementary school students are accommodations from the proposal of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. "We must not lose to India. Because once again, ladies and gentlemen, to achieve our golden Indonesia, we need a golden generation. We want more coding experts, AI experts, machine learning experts, and others," said Gibran during his address at the coordination meeting for the evaluation of basic and secondary education in the Gandaria area, South Jakarta, on Monday, November 11, 2024.
The Ministry of Elementary and Secondary Education will add coding and AI as optional subjects. It is already included in the upcoming curriculum renewal planning. However, the optional subjects of coding and AI will be applied in schools that already have adequate facilities.
"Because it requires sophisticated tools and good internet facilities, and not all of our schools have these resources. Hopefully, this can support the president's program for digitalization," said Mu'ti.
