TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was reported to have fled Damascus to an unknown location after opposition fighters entered the capital city. Citizens took to the streets and filled the squares to celebrate Assad's departure.
Opposition fighters have entered the heart of Damascus and declared a new era. They invited Syrian nationals who sought refuge abroad to come back home. Hadi al-Bahra, Head of the Syrian opposition coalition abroad, declared that Damascus was now free from al-Assad's rule and congratulated all Syrian citizens.
Meanwhile, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali is said to still be at his residence. Al-Jalali stated readiness to cooperate with the opposition camp and ensure that public institutions continue to function. Abu Mohamed al-Julani, Head of the opposition group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has ordered other opposition groups not to attack public facilities.
Eyewitnesses recounted how the people of Damascus rejoiced and shouted 'freedom! Freedom!'. This freedom refers to Syria's liberation from the 50 years of rule by the Bashar al-Assad family.
Opposition fighters have released prisoners of war held at the Sednaya Penitentiary in northern Damascus. They have also done the same in other prisons over the past 10 days.
Syrian soldiers are reported to have surrendered their weapons to the opposition fighters. On Sunday morning, December 8, 2024, the Syrian military commander declared the end of Assad's reign.
The joy of the citizens was evident a few hours before the opposition fighters entered Damascus and took over the city of Homs, located two hours north of Damascus. The capture of the city was carried out without resistance from the Syrian army.
Homs is a city of strategic importance. Soon after opposition rebels took control of the city, they severed the connection between Damascus and the coastal strongholds of al-Assad in Latakia and Tartus.
