TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had dinner with the President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, at Trump's private residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, on Wednesday, November 26, 2024.
Zuckerburg is the figure behind Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, while Trump is set to lead the U.S. starting January 2025.
"Mark was grateful for the invitation to join President Trump for dinner and the opportunity to meet with members of his team about the incoming administration. It’s an important time for the future of American innovation," said a statement from Meta.
An anonymous source told the New York Times that Zuckerberg initiated the meeting, backtracking on his previous move to censor Trump and fund the Democrats in 2020. The topics discussed by Trump and Zuckerburg were not made public.
"We do not comment on reports of private meetings that did or did not occur," said Trump's spokesperson, Steven Cheung.
Meanwhile, deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, confirmed the dinner, saying Zuckerberg “has his own interest” and agenda.
In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday evening, Miller stated that Zuckerberg clarified to Trump his stance in supporting the “national renewal of America under Trump’s leadership.”
Zuckerberg had previously banned Trump from Facebook and Instagram in 2021, stating that Trump was involved in the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.
During the 2020 campaign, Zuckerberg donated US$400 million to several institutions predominantly led by the Democratic Party to facilitate easier voting processes and democracy. Zuckerberg was known to facilitate what was described by Time magazine as the “fortification” of the 2020 vote in favor of Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris.
Recently, Trump warned that Zuckerberg could face legal action if found interfering in the U.S. presidential election. However, in this election, Zuckerberg praised Trump by calling him a 'badass' after surviving an assassination attempt during a campaign in Pennsylvania. Not only that, he also promised to stay out of the election.
In October 2024, Donald Trump mentioned in several interviews that he liked Zuckerberg “much better now.”
