TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - All European Union member states are legally bound to execute arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC). According to European Union spokesperson Peter Stano, as quoted from Anadolu, this includes warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who have been accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
The ICC alleges that both individuals bear responsibility for the atrocities committed during the conflict, which resulted in the tragic loss of over 44,000 lives. Before being dismissed earlier this month, Gallant led the attacks in Gaza.
Several EU countries have publicly declared their intention to comply with the ICC's arrest warrants, pledging to detain Israeli officials should they enter their territory. However, not all EU member states have explicitly expressed their commitment to enforcing the ICC's orders.
Stano emphasized the bloc's strong commitment to international criminal justice and the principles enshrined in the Rome Statute, the founding treaty of the ICC. He stressed that all EU member states that have ratified the Rome Statute are obligated to execute arrest warrants issued by the ICC.
The ongoing genocide in Gaza has drawn widespread international condemnation. The blockade of aid shipments and the deliberate targeting of civilians have been condemned as attempts to systematically destroy the population of Palestine. In addition to the ICC charges, Israel faces a separate genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
