TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Indonesian Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti expressed her disappointment regarding the issuance of permits for floating net cages (Keramba Jaring Apung) along the east coast of Pangandaran in West Java. This aquaculture method is considered dangerous because it can pollute the coastal ecosystem and damage coral reef density due to waste and excrement from fish feed.
Pudjiastuti mentioned that President Prabowo Subianto had promised to eradicate floating net cages from the east coast of Pangandaran. She demanded accountability from the chair of the Gerindra Party, as this promise has not been fulfilled.
"Apparently, the East Coast of Pangandaran has granted permits to three companies to establish floating net cages," Susi stated in a social media post on X via the @susipudjiastuti account on Sunday, August 10, 2025.
According to Susi, the three companies granted permits to build the cages on the beach are PT Pasifik Bumi Samudera, PT Vietmindo Inter Pasifik, and Supriadi, an individual. "I am very concerned and deeply hurt by the issuance of permits for KJAs on the East Coast of Pangandaran. These three companies should not have been granted permits," she remarked.
Susi stated that the floating net cages located only 900 meters from the edge of Pangandaran Beach should not have been granted operational permits. She urged the government to revoke these companies' permits to establish this type of cage on Pangandaran Beach.
Aside from damaging the coastal ecosystem, the cages also disrupt the coastal scenery. Susi believes this aquaculture method reduces the attractiveness of Pangandaran Beach and its fishing productivity.
