Two years later, Suryadharma Ali started his political career. At that time, he entered the parliament and served as the Chairman of the House of Representatives Commission V from 2001-2004. His political career continued when he was elected as the Chairman of PPP from 2007-2014.
Suryadharma Ali also served as the Minister of Religious Affairs during the leadership of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. However, his career as a Minister was tainted by a corruption case. He was sentenced to 6 years in prison plus a fine of Rp300 million or an alternative of 3 months imprisonment.
