TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Gaza war has had a negative impact on the economy of the Gazan people. The economy has been completely paralyzed, many wealthy people who have businesses have become poor. On average, people in Gaza are poor and destitute.
Mahmoud Hasyim Anbar, Dean of the Faculty of Tafsir & Ulumul Quran, Islamic University of Gaza, said that educated people, including academics, seem to be targeted by the Zionist army because they are considered to be able to produce Palestinian independence fighters.
"As an academic and a doctor, I am a target for the Israeli army. If I were still there, maybe my children and wife would be killed with weapons. They would kill the whole family," said Anbar, as reported by Antara, Saturday, January 4, 2024.
Lecturers usually teach for 15 hours every week. Lecturers who teach Masters students teach for 12 hours every week. Meanwhile, lecturers who hold the title of professor only teach for 9 hours every week.
However, since the escalation of Israeli attacks, the campus of the Islamic University of Gaza with its beautiful gardens, now almost all of its infrastructure has been razed to the ground. Laboratories that support learning can no longer be used because the Israeli army is not only targeting Hamas, but also civilian facilities.
The devastating and repeated attacks by the Israeli army have caused most Gazans to live in refugee camps and live in limitations. There is no proper place to defecate, the availability of food and drinks is very limited, and the economy is completely paralyzed.
Many rich people have become poor, even professors who usually get a salary of USD1,500 (Rp24.3 million) or more every month and routinely, since the attack on October 7, 2023 only get USD200-300 (Rp3.2-4.8 million) adjusting to campus conditions.
Fortunately, this situation did not immediately stop students from wanting to continue their studies. The campus then decided to continue teaching online, both for students in Gaza and those from Indonesia.
Communication between students for undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels is mainly done via WhatsApp and social media Facebook and Instagram, occasionally using the Zoom online meeting platform.
"Despite the displacement and very difficult conditions, they still try to be able to study online with lecturers. They are even exempted from fees per semester. As a result, this condition also affects the salaries of lecturers at the Islamic University of Gaza.
"We pray to Allah, hopefully this war will stop soon and they can continue their studies as they should on campus," said Anbar.
