TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of demonstrators gathered in the capital city of Tbilisi, Georgia, on Saturday, November 29, 2024, to protest against the government for canceling talks to join the European Union. The protest turned violent when the police shot water and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.
The protest on Saturday, November 29, 2024, was the largest ever after the anti-Western party was re-elected at the end of last month, where the pro-European opposition claimed the election was rigged. Fire erupted in the parliament building, possibly triggered by a firework.
Demonstrators set fire to the statue of Bidzina Ivanishvili, the richest person in Georgia and the founder of the ruling party in Georgia. The statue stood between the parliament steps. Media in Georgia reported that protests erupted in several major cities and regions - scattered across Georgia.
On Saturday morning, November 29, 2024, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze accused the pro-European opposition of planning a revolution. Georgia's security forces said that political parties had attempted to forcibly overthrow the government.
Georgia has long been one of the pro-Western countries since the fall of the Soviet Union, but recently the country has been leaning towards Moscow. On Thursday, November 28, 2024, Georgia's ruling party, the Georgian Dream Party, decided to temporarily suspend talks with the European Union for the next four years. This was because the Georgian Dream Party suspected that the European Union was pressuring Georgia.
Membership in the European Union is very popular in Georgia. The country's constitution even includes the goal of joining the European Union. Tina Kupreishvili, a demonstrator outside the parliament waving the flags of the European Union and Georgia, said she wanted Georgia to uphold its constitutional commitment to join the European Union.
"The people of Georgia are trying to protect their constitution, protect the country and nation, and try to tell the government that the rule of law is everything," said Kupreishvili.
