TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Considerable political experience is commonly taken into account when determining the success rate of a presidential candidacy. This is due to the fact that every country needs a leader who is not a novice in maneuvering the future of a million population.
However, these notable figures had very little to no involvement in the United States’ political landscapes prior to their presidencies.
Citing the World Atlas, Donald Trump was not the first president of the United States to serve without any solid political involvement. Here is a list of U.S. presidents without political experience.
1. Donald J. Trump
Born into a wealthy New York family, Donald Trump was no stranger to formidable connections, ranging from business tycoons to entertainment giants. With the help of his father, Trump established his own real estate empire shortly after completing his bachelor's degree in economics.
Trump’s immense influence further expanded to the entertainment industry through his massive involvement in beauty pageants, sports, televised wrestling, and television cameos. In June 2015, Donald J. Trump made a public announcement for his presidential candidacy against Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, where he managed to win with 304 votes of the Electoral College.
2. Dwight D. Eisenhower
Dwight D. Eisenhower’s heroic status, tracing back to World War I, brought the devoted general to become U.S. president without any political experience. During his youth, Eisenhower served in various military positions for over 22 years as part of the nation’s first and foremost defense.
Eisenhower won the Republican nomination for president in 1951 on the strength of his colossal contribution to shaping the country's military posture during World War II.
3. Herbert Hoover
With a degree in geology and a background as a professional mining engineer, Herbert Hoover was the first president ever elected whose previous ventures did not align with politics. Hoover’s political career did not begin until President Woodrow Wilson assigned him as the director of the newly established U.S. Food Administration during World War I, which then granted him a worldwide reputation as a humanitarian promoter.
Hoover ran for the presidency upon the resignation of Calvin Coolidge as U.S. president, garnering favorable media coverage with no significant challengers.
4. Ulysses S. Grant
Military professionals were greatly respected due to their heroic status during the World War, and this has affected a country’s political stance toward such professionals, including the United States. As one of the earliest elected Presidents without political experience, Ulysses S. Grant has previously made a name for himself in the military environment.
Abraham Lincoln’s assassination was the turning point for Grant’s political involvement which led to his candidacy for the Republican nomination.
5. Zachary Taylor
Zachary Taylor made it feasible for his successors to win the presidential election without having to hold political positions, where he ran his candidacy under the Whig Party. After his inauguration in 1849, Taylor spent the majority of his time dealing with domestic issues, including slavery and the newly acquired western territories.
