TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Inside sources of Hamas denied reports spread by some Israeli media claiming that its political office has been moved from Qatar to Turkey.
They dismissed the reports as mere rumors spread by that these reports are merely rumors being spread by Israeli occupation from time to time.
The news was also denied by a Turkish diplomatic source on Monday, November 18, 2024. They refuted reports stating that Hamas had relocated its political office to Turkey from Qatar, adding that members of the Palestinian resistance group only visited that country from time to time.
"Hamas Political Bureau members visit Turkey from time to time. Claims that indicate the Hamas Political Bureau has moved to Turkey do not reflect the truth," said the source.
NATO member Turkey has strongly criticized Israel for its attacks in Gaza and Lebanon and does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization. Some Hamas political officials regularly visit Turkey.
Earlier in the day, the newspaper The Times of Israel reported, citing an Arab diplomat, that senior members of the Palestinian Hamas movement had moved from Qatar to Turkey after Doha suspended mediation efforts regarding a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas, citing a lack of genuine commitment to negotiations.
The newspaper stated that Hamas officials who were expelled by Qatar last week are now accommodated in Turkey, said a diplomat.
Times of Israel also mentioned that Ankara, where many politburo members have already been residing with their families, is a logical destination after Doha withdrew from the negotiations, but Turkey risks conflicting with the Biden administration.
The departure of senior Hamas politburo members from Doha was first reported by the Israeli public broadcaster, Kan.
On November 8, the U.S. revealed that they had asked Qatar to oust Hamas officials from Doha, which had been hosting Hamas since 2012, purportedly under Washington's pressure.
The U.S. stated that they made the request after Hamas repeatedly rejected hostage deal proposals and executed six prisoners, including an American citizen.
Several weeks ago, sources informed Al Mayadeen that Hamas had not received any request to leave Qatar's capital.
"Communications between the Hamas leadership and Qatari officials remain ongoing," these sources emphasized, adding that the Palestinian movement had developed alternative plans to relocate its offices if necessary.
Last week, Qatar stated that they had informed Hamas and Israel that they would suspend efforts to mediate the Gaza ceasefire and prisoner release agreement until both showed willingness and seriousness.
The Qatari Foreign Ministry had previously stated that recent reports about Hamas' office in Doha were "inaccurate," emphasizing that the primary purpose of the office is to serve as a communication channel between concerned parties.
