TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto is committed to helping the independence of Palestine. This was conveyed in his first speech after being inaugurated on Sunday, October 20, 2024.

In his speech, Prabowo emphasized Indonesia's full support for the struggle of the people of Palestine in achieving independence. Indonesia adheres to the principles of anti-colonialism, anti-crisis, global solidarity, and continues to advocate for the rights of the Palestinian people amidst worsening conditions due to the conflict.

"We have a principle that we must stand in solidarity, we must defend the oppressed people in this world. That is why we support the independence of the Palestinian people," said President Prabowo.

Prabowo stated that the Indonesian Government under President Joko Widodo has been actively sending humanitarian aid to Palestine. He mentioned that Indonesia has sent medical personnel to assist in the Gaza and Rafah regions.

As reported by Antara, his commitment to helping Palestine includes preparing hospitals for war victims. "We will prepare Indonesian Armed Forces hospitals for Palestinian citizens who are war victims," he emphasized.

Furthermore, the Indonesian Government has tripled the funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in 2023.

This year, the assistance has doubled to US$1.2 million, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In addition, the Indonesian government continues to promote innovative financing to strengthen UNRWA, including exploring cooperation with the National Alms Agency (Baznas) to improve the distribution of aid to UNRWA.

Since November 2023, Baznas has distributed around US$3.3 million to the Palestinian people.

Prabowo's Support Since his Ministry Days

As quoted from Asia News, this is not the first time Prabowo has spoken about Palestine in his speeches. During the third debate in January, Prabowo emphasized the importance of a strong military power so that a nation is not oppressed by another nation "as happened in Gaza".

While serving as the Minister of Defense, Prabowo mentioned that he had sent peacekeeping troops to Gaza. During a meeting at the Shangri-La Dialogue world security forum in Singapore on Saturday, June 2, 2024, Prabowo called for a ceasefire between Palestine and Israel. He also pursued a peaceful proposal addressed to US President Joe Biden.

"We are trying as much as possible to provide humanitarian aid. If needed and requested by the UN, we are ready to provide significant peacekeeping forces to maintain and enforce this prospective ceasefire," said Prabowo, as quoted from the official Shangri-La Dialogue broadcast.

Prabowo stated that an investigation into humanitarian crimes in the Rafah, Gaza region is necessary. He is working towards a fair solution for the situation in Palestine.

"And this means that not only does Israel have the right to exist, but also the rights of the Palestinian people to have their own homeland, their own country, to live in peace," said Prabowo.
