TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono held a bilateral meeting with Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsakhna on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. The two discussed cooperation in various sectors, particularly digitalization, the economy, and education.

Minister Sugiono expressed optimism about the potential for Indonesia-Estonia collaboration in his statement. "The increasing number of meetings between Indonesia and Estonia reflects our efforts to strengthen ties," he said.

He emphasized the importance of facilitating the cooperation process through policy changes, including bureaucratic efficiency and collaboration in the education sector. Sugiono also highlighted the opportunity to leverage Estonia’s strengths as one of the most digitally advanced countries in the world.

"Estonia has a very high level of digitalization, and we believe Indonesia can benefit from their experience," he added.

Sugiono also welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) and Estonia’s business association (KOMER) as a concrete step to strengthen economic ties.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsakhna appreciates Indonesia’s commitment to digitalization, including President Prabowo’s ambitious plans in the sector. “Estonia has 100 percent of its public services online and is a global leader in cybersecurity. We are ready to collaborate with Indonesia,” he stated.

Tsakhna announced plans to sign a digital knowledge cooperation agreement between the two governments at the next ministerial meeting. In addition, he offered Estonia’s support, as a member of the European Union (EU), to help expand Indonesia’s cooperation with the regional bloc. “The EU is a strategic partner for Indonesia and ASEAN, and Estonia can serve as a bridge,” he said.

The discussion also covered innovation, green technology, and global security stability. Tsakhna emphasized the importance of collaboration in the transition to sustainable energy, while Sugiono expressed openness to learning from Estonia’s 20 years of experience as a member of the European Union.

Both ministers agreed to accelerate the implementation of various initiatives, including student exchanges and enhancing public service efficiency through digitalization. The meeting is expected to serve as a foundation for strengthening strategic cooperation between the two countries in the future.
