TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Industry Ministry has announced plans to implement mandatory halal certification for all domestically produced ceramic tableware and glassware products by 2026.

“Like other consumer goods, the government will mandate halal certification for domestic ceramic tableware and glassware products by 2026,” said M. Rum, Inspector General of the Industry Ministry, during the opening ceremony of the "Twin Fest 2024: Ceramic Tableware & Glassware Indonesia" event in Jakarta on Wednesday, December 13, 2024, as quoted from the official broadcast.

He said this policy is aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of domestic products in the face of increasing competition from imported goods. The Industry Ministry is committed to supporting the growth of the industry by encouraging continuous quality improvements to meet the demands of both domestic and global markets.

According to M. Rum, data from the first half of 2024 indicates that the utilization rate of the national ceramic tableware industry remains below 50% despite a production capacity of 253,796 tons per year. Similarly, the Indonesian glassware industry has a production capacity of 286,380 tons per year, and the glass packaging industry has a production capacity of 403,679 tons per year, primarily focusing on soda lime glass products.

Despite these challenges, the Industry Ministry remains optimistic about the long-term prospects of the industry, driven by increasing demand both domestically and internationally.

In addition to the mandatory halal certification, the government is implementing several strategic measures to support the growth and competitiveness of the industry. Firstly, the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) has been established as a mandatory requirement for all ceramic products, thereby safeguarding the domestic market from low-quality imports.

Secondly, the government has introduced incentives such as the provision of Specific Natural Gas Prices (HGBT) at US$6.5 per Million British Thermal Unit (MMBTU). This policy has proven effective in reducing production costs and stimulating new investments within the ceramics sector.

Furthermore, Rum said the Industry Ministry is actively promoting digital transformation within the manufacturing sector through the implementation of the Making Indonesia 4.0 roadmap. Key initiatives include enhancing production efficiency through the adoption of best practices and advanced technologies, promoting the use of environmentally friendly technologies (green technology), modernizing factories through the integration of digital printing technology, and fostering innovation in the design of national ceramic tableware and glassware products to align with current market trends.

To date, six ceramic tableware industries have participated in the Industry 4.0 training programs organized by the Directorate of Cement, Ceramics, and Non-metallic Mineral Processing Industry (ISKPBGN) at the Industry Ministry. The Ministry aims to increase the number of participating companies in the future, thereby enhancing the industry's overall efficiency and competitiveness.
