TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, plans to request the return of Indonesia’s cultural heritage objects from several countries, including India, where the country’s Pucangan Inscription resides.

“We hope President Prabowo Subianto will ask, among other things, for the return of the Pucangan Inscription during his visit to India,” Fadli said at the Ministry of Culture Building, Jakarta, Wednesday, January 8, 2024.

President Prabowo is scheduled to visit India on January 25-26, 2025.

Fadli said the Pucangan Inscription is an important heritage for the Indonesian people, as it contains the genealogy of King Airlangga in the X century.

Additionally, the Gerindra politician said his ministry will request the Netherlands return several of heirloom keris, or asymmetrical dagger, back to Indonesia. Two of the daggers were of Prince Dipononegoro and Teuku Umar.

“And keris from Madura Sultanate, Yogyakarta, and across Indonesia,” he added. The Ministry of Culture, Fadli said, also plans to renew and add to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Netherlands, Britain, and Germany. “But most importantly, we are ready to acquire the repatriated objects,” Fadli said. “So far, there are around 800 items of repatriated objects.”

Previously, on December 16, 2024, the Ministry of Culture welcomed the repatriation of 272 objects of Indonesian cultural heritage from the Netherlands.
