
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Smartphones have become an essential part of everyday life, including in Indonesia. From staying connected to conducting digital transactions, these devices are now deeply embedded in various daily activities.
According to the trend analysis platform Exploding Topics, Indonesia is among the top five countries with the largest number of smartphone users globally. It ranks fourth after China, India, and the United States.
Below is the list of the top five countries with the most smartphone users, based on data from Exploding Topics:
China: 974.69 million users, population 1.43 billion
India: 659 million users, population 1.42 billion
United States: 276.14 million users, population 338.28 million
Indonesia: 187.7 million users, population 275.5 million
Brazil: 143.43 million users, population 215.31 million
Data from mobile app market provider Priori Data also shows a rise in global smartphone usage. In 2024, the number of smartphone users worldwide reached approximately 4.88 billion. By 2025, this number had grown to more than 7.2 billion smartphones in use globally.
As reported by Antara on January 31, 2024, the Association of Indonesian Internet Service Providers (APJII) stated that internet penetration in Indonesia rose from 78.1 percent in 2023 to 79.5 percent in 2024.
“This reflects a steady rise since 2018, when the rate was 64 percent. The data shows a continuing upward trend in internet adoption,” said APJII Chairman Muhammad Arif at the time.
He explained that the growing figures demonstrate improved access to and use of digital technology in the country.
According to the survey, internet penetration was highest among Millennials (ages 28–43) at 93.17 percent, followed by Generation Z (ages 12–27) at 87.02 percent, and Generation X (ages 44–59) at 83.69 percent.
