TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed regret over the UN Security Council's failure to adopt a draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. The ministry believes this failure hinders the peace process and further exacerbates the suffering of the Palestinian people.
"Indonesia regrets the failure of the UN Security Council in adopting a draft resolution on November 20 calling for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all hostages," the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Thursday, November 21.
Indonesia urges the international community to take all necessary steps to achieve a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and to “ensure unhindered humanitarian access and distribution for Palestinian people.”
Earlier on Wednesday, November 20, the United States once again vetoed a draft resolution of the U.N. Security Council demanding an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The draft resolution—submitted by Algeria, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, South Korea, Japan, Slovenia, Guyana, Ecuador, Malta, and Switzerland—received 14 votes.
The resolution reiterates the demand for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and urges the United Nations to fulfill its responsibility in maintaining international peace and security.
The resolution also highlights the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and calls for unhindered access for Palestinians in Gaza to essential services and much-needed humanitarian aid for their survival.
Prior to the Wednesday vote, the U.S. has vetoed three UN Security Council draft resolutions calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The U.S. vetoed resolutions in October 2023, December 2023, and February 2024 and abstained from voting on other draft resolutions.
