TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian national team midfielder, Marselino Ferdinan, is in the spotlight after successfully bringing the Garuda squad to win 2-0 against Saudi Arabia. He scored two goals in the match witnessed by around 55,000 spectators at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta, on Tuesday night, November 19, 2024.
After scoring the second goal, he ran towards the corner of the field and sat on one of the ball boy chairs. Not only did he sit with his left hand on his waist, but he also did a mouth-covering celebration. "The celebration didn't mean anything, it was just natural. I usually do that in AFC U-23, when I scored against Jordan and I reminded the supporters not to prolong their euphoria, our goal is not here, there are still several other matches so we have to be at our best," he said in a press conference after the match.
He stated that scoring goals is not solely his personal effort, but the result of the hard work of the squad under Shin Tae-yong's guidance. The Oxford United player also emphasized the importance of implementing the coach's tactics.
"I believe in myself that I am ready to be played as a starter, that is important. And by nature, if I know that from the beginning I also have calmness and confidence. So the first goal moment is very important for me, I release everything, the burden, from there I start to find my true self," said the 20-year-old player.
Marselino scored the first goal in the 32nd minute. He successfully finished the pass from Ragnar Oratmangoen. In the 57th minute, he scored a goal after collaborating with Calvin Verdonk. The score changed to 2-0.
Marselino seemed surprised that he could score two goals in that match. He ran to the right corner of The Green Falcons' goal while facing the spectators. His celebration was not excessive, he looked more stunned in front of the Jakarta supporters, then cried in the corner of the field.
The 20-year-old player was on the field from the start of the match until the 78th minute. Along with Oratmangoen and Rafael Struick, the Garuda trio often shared the ball while welcoming long balls from the backline filled by Jay Idzes and his teammates.
After winning the match against Saudi Arabia, Indonesian national team is in third place in the current standings of Group C Qualification for the 2026 World Cup with six points. This result is exactly the same as Saudi Arabia's tally in 4th place, while previously the Garuda squad only had three points and was at the bottom of the standings.
