TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) Dzulfikar Ahmad Tawalla said that the Indonesian citizens who were victims of the shooting by Malaysian security forces did not attack them first. Dzulfikar denied the accusations of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) that the migrant workers attacked the patrol boat first.

"The results of coordination with our police attaché in Malaysia stated that our Indonesian citizens did not resist. Moreover, using sharp weapons," said Dzulfikar when contacted by Tempo on Saturday, February 1, 2025.

According to Dzulfikar, the story from the victims' version was obtained after the Indonesian Embassy and police attaché visited the two victims who had regained consciousness. Until now, he said, the P2MI Ministry is still coordinating with a number of related parties to explore other facts from the incident.

Previously, APMM stated that the ship carrying Indonesian citizens attacked officers when it was intercepted in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor, on Friday morning, January 24, 2025. The attack was used as an excuse by the patrol team to open fire on the ship that was supposed to transport a number of Indonesian citizens from Selangor to Dumai illegally. The shooting resulted in one Indonesian citizen being killed and four others being injured.

The Police Attaché of the Indonesian Embassy in Malaysia, Senior Commissioner Juliarman Eka Putra Pasaribu, said that the ship carrying a number of Indonesian migrant workers was indeed trying to escape when asked to stop by APMM. The ship was carrying a number of Indonesian citizens who had entered Malaysia illegally and were about to return to Indonesia.

"They were going to Dumai by paying a sum of money to the agent who was going to smuggle them," said Juliarman.

Before the shooting incident occurred, said Juliarman, the APMM patrol team asked the ship carrying the Indonesian citizens to stop and provide identification. However, the ship carrying the migrant workers ignored the order and fled at high speed.

He said there was a chase. However, the APMM patrol team was unable to stop the ship because it was traveling at high speed. "The ship used three engines, because they could not be caught up, they fired ten shots at the target and ended up injuring the passengers on board," said Juliarman.
