TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Economist from Paramadina University, Wijayanto Samirin, believes that Indonesia can take the best scenario available, which is by joining both the BRICS forum and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). According to Wijayanto, this move could boost Indonesia's international profile and enhance its bargaining position on the global stage.
"The best scenario is to join both like what Thailand and Turkey have attempted," Wijayanto stated in a written release as quoted on Saturday, 26th of October 2024.
Wijayanto mentioned that there are no formal restrictions that would prevent Indonesia from becoming a member of both forums simultaneously. Joining BRICS doesn't have to mean keeping a distance from the European Union (EU) and the USA, which are OECD members. Likewise, being an OECD member does not imply keeping a distance from BRICS countries, especially China and Russia.
"OECD and BRICS are not rigid blocs, each member remains free to engage in cooperation," he said.
However, if Indonesia is faced with choosing only one forum to join, there are several considerations that need to be taken into account. In this respect, the option that benefits Indonesia the most should be selected. It is also crucial to consider which forum values Indonesia's position more, allowing Indonesia's membership to be executed more swiftly.
"As an analogy, if we have two car options with differing qualities but we can tolerate those differences, then we would choose the car with less cumbersome purchasing requirements," Wijayanto added.
Nevertheless, Wijayanto emphasized that Indonesia should not spend too long deliberating. He noted that if Indonesia deliberates for too long, it would only result in the worst scenario for Indonesia.
"The worst scenario is being left in a hanging position. Not becoming a part of either is a consequence of being indecisive," he said.
Prior to the press statement by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday, 25th of October 2024, Indonesia expressed its desire to join BRICS at the BRICS Plus Summit in Kazan, Russia on 23-24th of October 2024. With this announcement, Indonesia's process to become a BRICS member has commenced.
