TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Social Affairs, will build free schools for underprivileged students, as confirmed by Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf. The schools will be addressed as “Sekolah Rakyat” or “People’s School.”

The ministry has asked the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to assist in the program realization.

“President Prabowo mandated us to build Sekolah Rakyat,” the minister said in an official statement on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

According to the minister, nicknamed Gus Ipul, President Prabowo previously conveyed the intention to establish free schools during a coordination meeting on community empowerment at the Bogor Presidential Palace on Friday, January 3, 2025.

The free schools for underprivileged students will resemble boarding schools, ensuring quality while remaining free of charge and guaranteeing the nutritional intake of the students.

“The main purpose of these schools is to break the chain of poverty. The parents may be poor, but that should not be inherited by the children. We must break the chain by sending the kids to school,” said Gus Ipul.

Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti welcomes the invitation to assist in the program and said he’s ready to work with the Ministry of Social Affairs to accelerate the realization of Sekolah Rakyat.

“Our current students’ admission (PPDB) has helped underprivileged students with four paths, one of which is the affirmation of children with disabilities and underprivileged students,” he said.

With the construction of People’s School, the government can now accommodate underprivileged students who were not admitted to public schools.
