TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono expressed his appreciation for the Gaza ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas following negotiations in Qatar.

“Indonesia appreciates the ceasefire agreement, consistent with our continuous efforts alongside the international community,” said Sugiono in a written statement on X on Thursday, January 16, 2025.

Sugiono highlighted the devastating war that has been ongoing since October 2023, emphasizing the tragic loss of tens of thousands of Palestinian lives due to Israel's actions.

“These are not just statistics; each number is a human life,” he remarked.

Sugiono said the next crucial step is to ensure immediate and comprehensive implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement to prevent further loss of life.

He expressed hope that this ceasefire would serve as a catalyst for lasting peace in Palestine. Furthermore, he reiterated Indonesia's unwavering commitment to supporting an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.

This position, he explained, aligns with the two-state solution endorsed by the international community.

Sugiono emphasized Indonesia's readiness to contribute to the restoration of life in Gaza through humanitarian assistance, support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and efforts to rebuild the devastated region.

On Wednesday night, Hamas and Israel reached a ceasefire agreement, with mediators announcing its effective date as Sunday, January 19, 2025. This agreement includes the release of hostages held captive during the 15-month conflict, which has inflicted immense suffering on Gaza and destabilized the Middle East.
