TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Infectious Disease Control Board Member of the Indonesian Medical Association, or IDI, Erlina Burhan said that the initial symptoms of exposure to the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) virus are fever, flu, and cough, which usually only a dry cough.

"Symptoms of fever, but not always fever, sometimes just flu, and the cough is generally a dry cough, only a small part is phlegmy," said Erlina Burhan in an IDI discussion on HMPV held online on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

Other symptoms she mentioned include muscle aches, headaches, dizziness, and body condition is always fatigue.

"There is muscle pain, there is headache and then fatigue, lazy to eat and sometimes narrowing of the airways from HMPV disease," she said.

Erlina said the HMPV virus also worsens if someone already has an underlying disease, such as asthma. This virus can spread to the lungs and cause shortness of breath in asthma sufferers.

"The symptoms of the HMPV virus can be exacerbated if the patient already has asthma, causing an asthma attack that causes wheezing," Herlina says.

The incubation period for the HMPV virus before infection is up to six days. She said that during this period, symptoms appear on the fifth day.

"Well, the average incubation period for this virus is between three and six days. So once you are infected or the incubation period before symptoms appear, usually the average symptoms are around five days," she said.

She said the HMPV virus is very contagious because people with this disease usually experience flu and cough. Therefore, Erlina said, this virus spreads more quickly in the community because it spreads in the air space.

"We know that this virus is very contagious because it spreads through droplets from an infected person who coughs or sneezes, and there are healthy people who inhale the droplets containing this virus," he said.

Although this virus is airborne, Erlina explained that it would not be transmitted to someone with optimal immunity. She said the virus usually is not severe, causing only minor issues like a cough or the flu, which most people with good immunities can fight off.

"If the immune system is good, the virus (HMPV) can be destroyed by the immune system," Erlina remarked.
