TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Embassy in Seoul issued a response following the declaration of a military emergency in South Korea by President Yoon Suk Yeol, which began at 11:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.

The embassy urged all Indonesian citizens in South Korea to remain calm and alert and continue to monitor developments in the security situation in their respective regions, as stated in their official statement released on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.

The embassy also advised Indonesians to avoid public gatherings, crowds, and areas with mass demonstrations or protests.

“Especially for [Indonesian citizens] in Seoul, please try as much as possible to temporarily avoid the National Assembly area in Yeouido, the Presidential Office in Yongsan, and other strategic locations,” the statement continued.

The embassy also cautioned Indonesian citizens against approaching, observing, or participating in any demonstrations, peaceful or otherwise, and emphasized the importance of complying with all applicable laws and instructions from local security forces.

Additionally, they advised citizens to always carry identification and pay close attention to the martial law decree, including any potential legal consequences for violating its provisions.

Indonesian citizens in need of assistance are encouraged to contact the embassy in Seoul via hotline +82-10-5394-2546, phone 02 2224 9000, or email [email protected].

As widely reported, South Korean President Yoon Seok Yeol declared martial law, which came into effect on Tuesday night for the first time in 45 years. However, the move faced significant opposition, with 190 out of the 300 members of parliament voting against it. Parliament eventually passed a resolution calling for the revocation of the martial law. The martial law was ultimately lifted on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at approximately 4:30 a.m. local time.
