TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Industry said it has proposed a new subsidy scheme for electric motorcycles in 2025, as confirmed by the Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industries, Setia Diarta.
“The scheme will likely be different this year—no longer through subsidies but incentives,” he said on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. He did not elaborate further on the reasoning behind the scheme change.
Setia said the new scheme will be realized through government-borne value-added tax (VAT) incentives. The government first implemented the policy to attract buyers for electric cars.
Despite proposing a new scheme, Setia has yet to reveal when the new incentives will be implemented. “We are still in the stage of proposing,” he said.
Since it was approved in March 2023, the subsidized electric motorcycles displayed on the Two-Wheeled Electric Motorized Vehicle Purchase Assistance Information System (SISAPIRA) website have been sold out as of October 2024.
Only 11,000 units were sold out of the 200,000 electric motorcycle units allocated in 2023. Meanwhile, in 2024, the government initially targeted sales of 600,000 units but was later cut to 60,000 units.
As many as 60,813 units of electric motorcycles have been sold out through the subsidies.
Yifang Group CEO said subsidies are crucial for electric motorcycles, as people will likely skip purchasing the products without a subsidy scheme.
