TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel's attack on two villages in southern Lebanon killed six people and injured five. The information was conveyed by the Ministry of Health of Lebanon on Saturday, December 7, 2024, following the latest potential challenge to the ceasefire that has been in place for less than two weeks.

As reported by Reuters, the Ministry of Health of Lebanon mentioned that five people were killed in the attack in Beit Lif, while one person was killed in a drone strike in Deir Seryan. Meanwhile, the Israeli military has not commented on the incident.

Tensions continue to escalate despite the ceasefire. Israel and the armed faction in Lebanon, Hezbollah, accuse each other of violations. Earlier this week, Israel threatened to resume fighting if the ceasefire with Hezbollah fails.

Last Monday, the United States stated that the ceasefire remains in place, although anticipating potential violations.

Prior to this, about nine people were killed and three others injured on Monday, December 2, 2024, due to an Israeli attack in two towns in southern Lebanon, Talousa and Haris. The Israeli military claimed that their attacks were targeting dozens of Hezbollah members across Lebanon. On the same day, Lebanese authorities reported two additional deaths due to an Israeli attack in another part of southern Lebanon, including a state security member who was killed while on duty, bringing the death toll to 11 on that day.

Lebanon's Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has requested the committee overseeing the ceasefire with Israel to obligate Tel Aviv to cease violations of the agreement and withdraw from Lebanese territory.

On November 27, the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel came into effect, ending over 14 months of fighting between the Israeli army and the Lebanese resistance group, Hezbollah. Lebanese media reported about 73 violations by Israel of the ceasefire agreement since it was implemented last week. Hezbollah has so far remained silent on Israel's violations of the agreement.

Under the terms of the ceasefire, Israel will gradually withdraw its troops to the south of the de facto border Blue Line, while the Lebanese army will deploy its troops in southern Lebanon within a period not exceeding 60 days. The implementation of this agreement will be monitored by the United States and France, but the details of the enforcement mechanisms are still unclear.

More than 3,960 people have been killed and over 16,500 injured in Israeli attacks in Lebanon, and more than 1 million people have been displaced since October last year, according to Lebanese health authorities Lebanon.
