TEMPO.CO, BandungThe Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) Community Service Team has created a prototype dew harvesting tool as an innovative solution to the clean water crisis in Indonesia. The tool, which was developed over four months, was tested in Lembang, West Bandung Regency, West Java, on November 22-23, 2024.

The project team consists of seven students: Kristin Dosma A.P. Padang, Rio Andrian, Dimas Rama Dhinata, and Fauzan Pratama from the Oceanography Study Program at ITB, Rizma Dwinanda Prawira, Fauzan Naashirulhaq, and Emilio Joshia Exaudi L from the Meteorology Study Program at ITB. The lecturers Susanna N., Edi Riawan, Ivonne Milichristi Radjawane, and Nabila Sofia Eryan Putri guided the students.

The team developed two types of dew harvesting nets: a conventional net measuring 1x1 meter and a modern electronic-based net. During the three-hour test of the modern net, it produced 30 milliliters of clean water by utilizing dew collected by a copper plate.

The Project Coordinator, also a lecturer in Oceanography at ITB, Susanna Nurdjaman, said the idea for the net was inspired by the abundant dew phenomenon in the highlands of Bandung every morning and evening. Lembang was chosen as the test location due to its characteristics as a foggy highland area.

"The dew that sticks to leaves and even the residents' clothes inspired us to create a tool that can maximize this natural resource," said Susanna on ITB's website on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.

Team members Dimas Rama Dhinata and Fauzan Pratama expressed optimism that further development will make the tool more productive and efficient. Implementing dew nets on a larger scale is believed to significantly impact addressing the water crisis.

In the future, the ITB team plans to implement this innovation on a larger scale with more advanced technology. The goal is to produce more clean water to meet the community's needs, especially in areas experiencing water crises.
