TEMPO.CO,  Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government has repaired one of four flood control water pumps that had its cable stolen a few days ago. Suwondo, Head of the Jakarta Bina Marga Office, stated that ongoing assessments are underway to prevent future occurrences of such incidents.

“Such thefts can render water pumps inoperable, potentially leading to flooding in nearby areas,” Suwondo warned in a written statement on Thursday, November 14, 2024.

The cable theft took place at the Underpass Angkasa pump pool in Central Jakarta between November 12 and 13, 2024. Following the incident, officials from the Central Jakarta Bina Marga Office, the Water Resources Office, and the Fire and Rescue Management Office promptly initiated repair efforts.

Suwondo explained that CCTV footage captured the culprits removing the cables at Underpass Angkasa. Subsequently, the Central Jakarta Bina Marga Office reported the incident to the Central Data and Information Command Center Team for increased surveillance of the area.

“On November 13, 2024, around 00:20 local time, pump operators discovered that the cables connecting the pump had been stolen,” he added.

A report was filed with the Kemayoran Police Station regarding the theft. Two suspects, identified as SL (34 years old) and SK (30 years old), have been apprehended.

These individuals are suspected of breaking into the pump house at Underpass Angkasa Street in Kemayoran District, Central Jakarta, and stealing the cables. The stolen cables, totaling eight pieces, were divided into two lengths: four 2-meter-long cables and four 5.5-meter-long cables.

“[We're investigating] whether they only took the inner components, discarding the outer layer, or the entire cable,” said Kemayoran Police Chief, Commissioner Agung Ardiansyah, on Wednesday afternoon, November 13, 2024.

In addition to Underpass Angkasa Street, cable thefts were also reported at Senen Underpass and the Dukuh Atas tunnel in Central Jakarta on Sunday, November 10, 2024. The perpetrators of these thefts, believed to have acted simultaneously, also severed CCTV cables to evade detection. The identities of the individuals involved in these incidents remain unknown.
