TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s former president, Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, claimed over 80 candidate pairs have asked for his endorsement in the upcoming regional election.
Jokowi revealed that the candidates asked for support in various forms, including requests to make declaration videos and take photos together.
"There were likely over 80 candidate pairs," said Jokowi after attending Jakarta gubernatorial candidate pair Ridwan Kamil and Suswono’s campaign on Monday, November 18, 2024, as quoted by Antara.
Jokowi hopes that his support can boost the popularity and electability of the candidates, especially since he has considered the pair’s previous track records, ability to understand existing problems, and commitment to helping the people.
"Many requested for me to come support them directly, but there’s not enough time,” said the former Jakarta Governor.
"I will cast my vote in Solo City," said the former Mayor of Surakarta.
Jokowi Supports Ridwan Kamil for His Track Record
During his visit to Jakarta, Jokowi firmly supported the pair of Ridwan Kamil-Suswono in the 2024 Jakarta Regional Elections. Jokowi said Ridwan Kamil is competent and an experienced leader, making him a worthy leader for Jakarta.
"If anyone were to ask me why I support Ridwan Kamil, it is because of his track record. I repeat. Why Ridwan Kamil? Because of his track record," Jokowi said while speaking to volunteers.
Jokowi then explained the advantages of Ridwan Kamil, starting from his tenure as the Mayor of Bandung City and Governor of West Java. Jokowi also mentioned the candidate’s academic track record, comprising a bachelor's degree in architecture from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and an urban design master’s from the University of California, Berkeley.
"Meaning, he is knowledgeable in city planning and city landscaping,” said Jokowi.
Jokowi also urged the people of Jakarta to act in the remaining days before the election day. "If the movement is correct and everyone is truly striving for the city we love, it can be just like a presidential election," he said.
The 2024 Jakarta Regional Elections are contested by three pairs of candidates, namely candidate pair number 1 Ridwan Kamil-Suswono (Rido), candidate pair number 2 Dharma Pongrekun-Kun Wardana (Dharma-Kun), and candidate pair number 3 Pramono Anung-Rano Karno (Pram-Doel).
