TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday, March 8, 2025, stated that Tehran will not be oppressed through a series of negotiations. The statement was made a day after the President of the United States Donald Trump sent a letter to Khamenei, containing an invitation to negotiate a nuclear deal.
In an interview with Fox Business, Trump stated that there are two ways to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, which are by making a deal or a military attack.
In a meeting with senior Iranian officials, Khamenei said that the offer from Washington to negotiate is aimed at imposing their expectations. "Forcing some countries through a series of negotiations will not solve the issue, but it is an act of domination and realizing their own expectations," said Khamenei as reported by the Iranian news agency.
"Talking to them (the United States) is the same as paving the way for other expectations. This is not just a matter of Iran's nuclear issue. Iran clearly does not want to accept their expectations," said Khamenei, as quoted from Reuters.
Trump previously expressed openness to dialogue with Tehran. He even exerted significant pressure in the first period of his administration by urging countries around the world to isolate Iran and reduce Iran's oil exports to zero.
In the first period of Trump's administration (2017-2021), Trump withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear deal, which was also made with other world powers to limit Iran's nuclear activities. In return, sanctions against Iran would be lifted.
After Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal in 2018 and re-imposed sanctions on Iran, Tehran violated the deal and resumed its nuclear activities.
Meanwhile, in November 2024, Iran expressed its intention to resolve the dispute with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding its compliance with its nuclear program, but it would not do so under pressure.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, after meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi in November 2024, stated that "The decision is in the hands of the EU/E3. We are willing to negotiate based on national interests and non-negotiable rights, but we refuse to negotiate under pressure and intimidation."
