TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mochammad Afifudin, the chair of the General Elections Commission (KPU), said six voting organizing team (KPPS) officers passed away during the 2024 regional election process.
This number is a steep drop from the number of KPPS officers who died during the presidential election earlier this year, which was recorded at 57 people.
"Based on data until midnight of November 29, it is recorded that 6 KPPS officers have passed away," Afifuddin said during a press conference at the KPU office in Central Jakarta on Friday, November 29, 2024.
Based on the records, the locations of the six election officers who died spread across several regions.
The details are one officer each at the polling station (TPS) 09 in Cibuaya Village, Cibuaya Sub-district, Karawang, West Java; at TPS 02 in Alai Selatan Village, Lembak Sub-district, Muara Enim, South Sumatra; and at TPS 116 Muara Baru, Penjaringan, North Jakarta. Meanwhile, two officers died while on duty in polling stations in East Java.
Additionally, 115 KPPS officers suffered from accidents or fell ill during the vote-counting process of the regional election. KPU will give compensation and burial costs to the families of the victims who passed away, amounting to Rp36 million and Rp10 million for the burial costs.
Furthermore, KPU also compensates KPPS officers who suffer permanent disabilities amounting to Rp30.8 million, severe injuries amounting to Rp16.5 million, and mild injuries amounting to Rp8.25 million.
The 2024 regional election was held simultaneously in 37 provinces and 508 regencies/cities. However, not all regions were able to hold the elections due to various reasons, so KPU has scheduled a revote, continuation of voting, and supplementary voting at 287 polling stations across 22 provinces.
"Several contributing factors include natural disasters, security disturbances, administrative or procedural errors by KPPS, voters who are not registered or ineligible to vote, as well as recommendations from the Bawaslu (Election Supervisory Agency)," Afifuddin said.
