TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The economic losses from the Los Angeles wildfires or LA fires are estimated to be between $135 billion and $150 billion, according to US weather forecaster AccuWeather. Tempo reported that the LA fires are likely to become one of the costliest wildfires in the state's history, destroying a total of 10,000 structures and more. Among the scope of the major LA fires, there are currently several famous Los Angeles landmarks that have experienced severe devastation.
Famous Landmarks Destroyed in the LA fires
According to Conde Nast Traveler and USA Today, Topanga State Park, Will Rogers State Historic Park, and Eaton's the Bunny Museums are some of the damaged landmarks affected by the LA fires. Other locations are listed below:
1. Topanga State Park
Located in the Santa Monica Mountains, Topanga State Park was caught in the path of the Palisades Fire, which burned parts of the iconic park. In addition to the landmark, the Topanga Ranch Motel, built in 1929 by William Randolph Hearst and consisting of 30 historic rooms famous for film and television, was also destroyed.
2. Will Rogers State Historic Park
The Will Rogers State Park ranch house overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica, once a popular film set for cowboy movies, burned in the LA fires. California State Parks officials confirmed the evacuation of the ranch's horses and some historical artifacts before the disaster.
3. Palisades Charter High School
As the historic natural disaster swept through the city, Palisades Charter High School was deeply affected by the LA fires. As the City of Santa Monica declared a state of emergency, it was reported that the educational institution, which has been featured in films such as "Teen Wolf," "Freaky Friday," and "Carrie," was part of the extensive destruction.
4. The Bunny Museum
The Bunny Museum, open for 27 years, was tragically affected by the Eaton Fire. Known as an encyclopedic museum about rabbits, it housed more than 60,000 rabbit items, including ancient artwork dating back 2,000 years. With most of the 46,000 items burned, the co-founders are actively raising funds to rebuild the landmark.
5. Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center
The buildings of the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center were caught in the Eaton Fire. It was confirmed that the congregation suffered structural damage to the home of the Conservative synagogue and Jewish preschool, B'nai Simcha.
6. Andrew McNally House
Although a private residence, the Andrew McNally House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. The loss of this Queen Anne-style mansion, named for the president of map printing giant Rand McNally Publishing, was heartbreaking for many.
7. Charles S. Farnsworth Park
Built in the 1930s, Charles S. Farnsworth Park features a playground, amphitheater, community center and walking trails. The stone building of this historic landmark was a victim of the devastating LA fires in the Easton area.
The LA fires have left a trail of devastation, not only in terms of economic losses, but also in terms of irreplaceable damage to the city's cultural and historic landmarks.
