TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG reported that a tectonic earthquake shook the west coast of East Coastal Area, Sarmi, Papua on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at 7:12 p.m. West Indonesia Time.
BMKG analysis showed that this earthquake has been updated to a magnitude of M5.4. The epicenter is located at coordinates 2.19 south latitude and 139.13 east longitude, specifically on land 56 kilometers southeast of Sarmi, Papua, at a depth of 35 kilometers.
"Considering the epicenter and hypocenter, the earthquake was a shallow type due to the activity of an active fault. The source mechanism analysis shows that the earthquake has a strike-slip mechanism," BMKG earthquake and tsunami director Daryono said in a statement Thursday.
The earthquake hit and was felt in the Sarmi area with an intensity scale of III MMI, which means noticeable vibrations indoors as if a truck was passing by. Modeling results indicate that this earthquake does not pose a tsunami threat.
As of 07:40 p.m., BMKG monitoring has not detected any aftershock seismic activity.
"The public is advised to remain calm and not to be influenced by unverified information. Avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged due to the earthquake," Daryono said.
