Meta Stop Fact Check Feature, Mark Zuckerberg's Reason: Too Biased and Damaging to Trust

TEMPO.CO, JakartaMeta Founder and Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg announced that he would stop the fact-checking feature on all platforms under the company's auspices. The move concerns freedom of expression and censorship by governments in each country, as well as system errors in Meta.

"We will remove the fact-checker and replace it with community notes, similar to X. Starting in the United States," Mark said via a video upload on his personal Facebook account on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

According to Mark, Meta has built many complex systems to moderate content. The termination of the fact-checking feature is a management responsibility to prevent various bad things such as content abuse, drug problems, terrorism, and child exploitation. There are also system problems such as the error of censoring one percent of content that actually impacts millions of people.

In the implementation of the General Election in the United States some time ago, Meta tried to overcome various content without a determinant of truth. However, Mark said, Meta's fact-checker was too politically biased and damaged more trust. "Over the next few months, we will implement a more comprehensive community notes system," he said.

Meta is trying to simplify its content policies and remove some restrictions, such as gender and immigration status. Mark wants people to be able to share their beliefs and experiences through Meta. The policy changes are being made to reduce errors that have led to some of Meta’s censorship.

Facebook, Mark’s first social media platform, has a filter that checks for policy violations. This time, Meta will use a similar filter to deal with illegal and serious violations.

“For minor violations, we would rely on someone reporting it before we would take action. The problem is, the filter made a mistake and removed a lot of content that shouldn’t have been removed,” Mark said.

After this, Meta’s censorship will be drastically reduced. The technology entity that owns WhatsApp and Instagram will also bring back civil content, following many users asking for recommendations to reduce political content.

Meta’s fact-checking program was introduced in 2016. Partnering with independent fact-checkers, Meta checks posts that are suspected of being false or misleading. Posts marked as ‘inaccurate’ will be given additional information, simply so that users can understand why the flag was given.

Meta's decision has recently been criticized by several parties because it is considered detrimental to social media users who want to find accurate information. There are also allegations that Meta's decision was based on political pressure from the new United States administration.
