TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Microsoft has announced 'Windows 365 Link' at the Microsoft Ignite 2024 conference held on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, US time. Windows 365 Link is a small-sized desktop PC that runs entirely through the cloud.
Quoting 9to5Mac, this device is designed as a lightweight and cost-effective alternative for the corporate market, but with different functions from traditional computers.
Windows 365 Link has a size similar to the Mac mini M4 from Apple. They differ in terms of how the device operates. While Mac mini is a complete computer running a local operating system, Windows 365 Link is only used to access Windows through the cloud.
With basic specifications such as 8GB RAM, 64GB storage, and an undisclosed Intel processor, Windows 365 Link functions only for streaming data from cloud servers, not running applications locally.
In terms of design, Windows 365 Link comes in a small black box with various ports at the back, including USB-C, two USB-A, DisplayPort, HDMI, and Ethernet. The device also supports modern wireless connectivity, such as Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
Citing The Verge report, Microsoft believes that this new device provides security benefits to IT consumers, as all data is encrypted in the cloud and nothing is stored offline that can be stolen or hacked. However, this device is entirely dependent on internet connectivity and will not function without network access.
This device will be sold for $349 or around Rp 5.5 million and requires a Windows 365 subscription, starting from $28 (Rp 445,000) per month. Although promising for corporate use, this device raises comparisons with Apple's Mac mini M4, which has higher specifications, a local operating system, and is sold starting from $599 or around Rp 9.5 million.
Windows 365 Link is scheduled to be available in the market in 2025. Microsoft hopes this device can be an efficient solution for companies looking to leverage the power of cloud computing without relying on large and expensive hardware.
