TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano located in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) erupted again on Sunday, November 24, 2024, in the morning at 09:56 AM local time. Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) urged people not to engage in any activities within a 7-kilometer radius from the eruption center.
According to official information released by PVMBG on Sunday, November 24, 2024, as cited by Antara, the eruption column was observed to reach a height of about 1,000 meters above the summit of the mountain or around 2,584 meters above sea level.
Monitoring by the communication and information team from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kemkomdigi) located in Ile Gerong Village indicated that the volcanic ash column, gray in color, with moderate to thick intensity, was moving westward.
PVMBG recommended that residents living around Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, as well as tourists in the area, refrain from any activities within a 7 km radius from the eruption center.
Residents are also urged to avoid the southwest to northwest sectors up to 8 km away. Those living around Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki also need to be cautious of potential rain-induced lahar floods, especially in rivers originating from the mountain.
In case of high-intensity rainfall, the disaster potential may escalate. Residents affected by ashfall are advised to wear masks or cover their noses and mouths to protect their respiratory systems from the hazardous volcanic ash that can endanger health.
East Flores Communications and Information Agency Head, Heronimus Lamawuran, stated that the East Flores District Government continues to coordinate with the Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki Observation Post in Pululera Village, Wulanggitang, East Flores, as well as the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation in Bandung for further monitoring.
"In addition, PVMBG is also coordinating with the NTT Provincial BPBD (Disaster Management Agency) and local PB (Public Protection) units to provide the latest information on volcanic activities, and we urge the public to comply with government directives, " Heronimus said.
As of Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 08:00 PM local time, a total of 13,240 people were affected by the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki.
