TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday acknowledged responsibility for the first time for the massive pager explosions that rocked Lebanon almost two months ago.
At least 26 people were killed and more than 3,200 others were injured when thousands of pager devices exploded in several areas in Lebanon on September 17 and 18.
Some people were critically injured due to the loss of hands, eyes, and shattered abdomens from the explosion.
"There are senior officials in Israel's defense institutions and political ranks who opposed the pager operation, as well as the elimination of [Hezbollah leader Hassan] Nasrallah," Netanyahu said in a Cabinet meeting as quoted by Israel's Channel 12.
"Before the pager operation, they told me that the United States would oppose it, but I did not listen to them," he added.
This is the first time that senior Israeli officials openly acknowledged responsibility for the massive explosion of wireless communication devices targeting Hezbollah officials in Lebanon.
Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Beirut on September 27.
Israel's massive airstrikes in Lebanon have been ongoing since late September against what they claim as Hezbollah targets, an escalation of cross-border warfare for a year since the start of the Gaza war.
More than 3,100 people have been killed and over 13,800 people injured in Israel's attacks since October 2023, according to Lebanese health authorities.
Israel launched an attack on southern Lebanon on October 1.
