TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sources reveal to the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth that the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may be involved in intimidating and extorting a military officer to obtain secret documents.
The involvement of two senior officials in Netanyahu's office in obtaining and publishing sensitive material from surveillance cameras related to a senior military officer is under investigation.
According to the sources, an investigation is underway to determine whether this is another incident where senior officials disregarded procedures, instructed subordinates to act in violation of rules, and breached information security and privacy principles.
The sources shared, "Spies recruited by Netanyahu's office in the Israeli military to steal secret documents and transfer them to the office, followed by false publications in the media to serve a narrative opposing hostage agreements."
According to the sources, this may explain how the officials gained access to some of the most sensitive documents and records.
The newspaper revealed that two senior officials in the Prime Minister's Office were found to have embarrassing personal documents related to a senior officer in the Israeli military. The newspaper noted that former Israeli prime minister's spokesman Eliezer Feldstein, who was suspected of leaking secret documents to the press, had previously been dismissed from the Israeli army during his reserve duty at the beginning of the Gaza war.
According to the report, Feldstein, who was arrested along with three others, including a security services member, was appointed as Netanyahu's official spokesman for military and security affairs after the October 7 attack, a position that did not exist previously.
Sources close to the investigation have disclosed that the implications of this leak are very severe - compromising vital intelligence sources, endangering lives, and potentially jeopardizing ongoing efforts to save Israeli captives. Short-term and long-term damage to Israel's security infrastructure is a major concern for the investigators.
Israeli courts have also stated that the publication of these documents will pose a "serious danger to the state's security" and may affect the security services' ability to repatriate the hostages, which is one of the goals of the war.
Political Drama
The ongoing political drama surrounding Netanyahu, such as the dismissal of Yoav Gallant, is framed by two key investigations by Shin Bet and the police.
Furthermore, it was recently announced to the public about a second investigation focusing on the destruction of sensitive documents related to the war. This investigation appears to center on efforts to alter, delete, or eliminate protocols, documents, and testimonies from important government offices. Previously, there were reports that former military secretary of Netanyahu, Major General Avi Gil, had filed an official complaint with the Attorney General regarding these actions.
At that time, there were also reports that, under the direction of the Prime Minister's wife, Netanyahu's staff members had raided archives and files, collecting and organizing material - potentially to control or manipulate public narratives. According to Maariv, these two investigations are expected to merge, revealing a disturbing picture of political interference at the highest levels, damaging the integrity of Israel and its security apparatus.
