TEMPO.CO, Medan - The Unit 2 Sub-directorate III of the North Sumatra Regional Police Drug Detective Team foiled the drug smuggling of 16 kilograms of crystal meth hidden in a Toyota Sienta car with the license plate number B 2041 BOC, last Monday. The vehicle was found at the PT Harapan Indah Transport office on Jalan Sunggal, Medan, as it was about to be sent to Jakarta using a towing truck (towing).
The discovery began when the expedition driver found a suspicious package in the car and reported it to the police. Officers conducting a search found 16 packages of plastic bags with Chinese characters containing crystal meth with a total net weight of 16,000 grams.
The investigation revealed that the car originated from Aceh, received by Wardiono and Azuar through intermediary Dedi. Dedi received the car from an unknown man at PT Mandiri Jaya Ekspres, Aceh. It was supposed to be handed over to PT Tirta Jaya in Medan to be sent to Jakarta.
The North Sumatra Regional Police Drug Detective Director, Police Commissioner Yemi Mandagi, described the modus operandi of the perpetrators as a shift in the drug syndicate's strategy. "They are utilizing expedition services to deceive the authorities, and we will not stand idly by. This case is still being developed to uncover a wider network," he said on Saturday, March 8, 2025.
The North Sumatra Regional Police has secured the evidence and conducted urine tests on witnesses with negative results. They have also analyzed mobile phone forensics, examined CCTV footage, and conducted further investigations in Aceh to pursue the main perpetrators.
The North Sumatra Regional Police Chief, Inspector General Whisnu Hermawan Februanto, appreciated the public's reports and cooperation in combating drugs. He stated that the disclosure of this case signifies the seriousness of the North Sumatra Regional Police in the fight against narcotics and serves as a warning to similar offenders.
"I urge the public to continue playing an active role in providing information regarding drug trafficking," said Whisnu.
