Nine Bangladeshi Nationals Arrested in Brawl with Indonesian Worker in Malaysia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs addresses the incident involving a brawl between Indonesian and Bangladeshi nationals in Malaysia. The incident occurred on Monday, July 14, 2025, at around 11:25 a.m. local time, at the Bangsar Hill Park construction project.

"The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur was informed about the brawl involving several workers from Indonesia and Bangladesh on the site of the Bangsar Hill Park construction project," said Judha Nugraha, the director of citizen protection, in a written statement on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

One Victim Taken to Hospital

Judha explained that the clash occurred due to a misunderstanding among the workers. As a result of the incident, one Indonesian national named S was found unconscious at the scene. He was immediately taken to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for medical treatment. "S has now been discharged from the hospital," said Judha.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs ensures that no Indonesian nationals died in this incident. The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has handled the case and coordinated with the authorities in Malaysia.

Police Arrest Nine People

An investigation was carried out by the Travers Police Station. As a result, nine Bangladeshi workers were arrested by the local police. Judha also stated that the situation is now under control.

"The project management has taken initial steps to separate the groups and tighten supervision to prevent similar incidents," he added.

Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia, Hermono, told Antara that the victim comes from Madura. "(The victim) is from Madura, Sampang," said Hermono. "He has been discharged from the hospital. It was his birthday today."

The incident occurred due to a misunderstanding regarding a noise complaint. Hermono has also spoken with Madurese figures in Malaysia, urging the Madurese community in Malaysia not to retaliate, which would only complicate the issue.

The Ambassador said that the assaulters have been apprehended by the police and are facing five years in prison.

"They have been arrested. Let the Malaysian police handle the law enforcement. Madurese people should not take matters into their own hands. We will monitor the law enforcement process," said Ambassador Hermono.

Previously, a 33-second video circulated on social media showing several construction workers wearing vests and helmets assaulting another worker.

In the footage, the victim, not wearing a project helmet, was kicked, punched repeatedly, and struck with a piece of iron. He attempted to evade before eventually collapsing at the construction site.

The video shows violence against a worker who was later identified as an Indonesian national. The recording also depicts the mob assault by several individuals suspected to be Bangladeshis.

Initial reports indicated that the violence was triggered by longstanding tension among the workers.

According to information gathered by ANTARA, Madurese figures in Kuala Lumpur will assemble the Madurese community tonight to advise them to exercise restraint and leave law enforcement to the authorities.
