TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Los Angeles (KJRI Los Angeles) reported an increase in the number of Indonesian citizens affected by the wildfires in Los Angeles, California, United States.

"So far, 163 Indonesian citizens, including students, have been affected by the wildfires," said Consul for Information and Socio-Culture of the Indonesian Consulate General in Los Angeles Afina Burhanuddin when contacted by Antara in Jakarta on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

This number shows an increase from the previous of 97 people reported on Saturday. The affected Indonesian citizens are reportedly living in the Pasadena, Altadena, Sylmar, and Calabasas areas.

According to Afina, the weather conditions in Los Angeles are still not conducive as the Santa Ana winds, which are one of the factors worsening the wildfire in Los Angeles, are expected to remain until Thursday afternoon local time.

"It is estimated that there will be light rain on Saturday," she said.

Meanwhile, most of the affected Indonesian citizens have reportedly been evacuated by the local government.

Some Indonesian citizens have evacuated to the homes of relatives and friends, and hotels, or are looking for new temporary housing.

The Indonesian Consulate General in Los Angeles has also prepared evacuation sites and logistical supplies for those in need.

"However, we recommend that (affected Indonesian citizens) go to official shelters because the facilities there are better, they can be registered and get the latest information, and they will get assistance," Afina said.

She also stated that the Indonesian Embassy in Los Angeles always urges Indonesian citizens to follow the local authorities' order, as several locations are still declared as emergency zones.

Fundraising efforts

To ease the burden of the Indonesian community and local people in Los Angeles, the Indonesian Consulate General will host a fundraising event and joint prayer by representatives of various religions on Sunday, January 19, 2025.

The Indonesian Consulate General official stated that the program would be open to the public, especially the Indonesian community in Los Angeles. They also did not set a specific target for the number of participants or funds raised at the event.

The deadly wildfires in Los Angeles since January 7, 2025, have consumed over 40,000 hectares of land and damaged about 12,000 buildings. As of Tuesday, the death toll from this natural disaster was reported to have reached 25.
