TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The new coach of the Indonesian national team, Patrick Kluivert, said that supporters are the most important part of the Indonesian national team's journey to the 2026 World Cup.

In his interview with Fabrizio Romano, Wednesday, Kluivert said this because building a team requires cooperation from all parties, especially support from supporters.

"It is very important to remember that a team is not just about the coach, players, or people around the team. But also about all the supporters. They are a vital part," said the 48-year-old coach, quoted through Fabrizio Romano's official X account, Wednesday.

Kluivert was officially announced by PSSI as the coach of the Indonesian national team on Wednesday, January 8. Two days earlier, the Garuda team ended a five-year collaboration with Shin Tae-yong.

When asked how he felt after being appointed to coach Indonesia, the man who once won the Champions League while playing for Ajax Amsterdam said that he was very excited.

Although his coaching career is not as glamorous as when he was a player, Kluivert wants to work hard to make a big contribution and be part of Indonesia's most historic journey which is now on its way to the 2026 World Cup.

"It is a big opportunity and significant responsibility for me, and of course I am very excited to contribute to the progress of this team, and success. I look forward to working with everyone and to achieving common goals," said the former top scorer of Euro 2000.

Kluivert will be contracted for two years from 2025 to 2027 with an option to extend the contract, with the closest target being to bring Indonesia to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

He will be assisted by two assistant coaches from the Netherlands, namely Alex Pastoor and Denny Landzaat. In addition to the two names, there will be two local Indonesian coaches who will be assistant coaches.

Patrick Kluivert is scheduled to arrive in Indonesia on Saturday, January 11, and will be introduced to the public the following day, Sunday, January 12.

His debut as Indonesia coach will be two third-round matches of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Australia and Bahrain on March 20 and 25.
