TEMPO.CO, JakartaPersebaya Surabaya CEO Azrul Ananda, expressed his views on the dismissal of Shin Tae-yong (STY) from the position of coach of the Indonesian National Team. He said that communication issues were the main challenge for the South Korean coach.

"We all have to thank him for all his work while handling the Indonesian national team. But in my personal opinion, STY's main problem while here was communication," said Azrul in Surabaya, Thursday.

He explained that communication challenges were increasingly complex with the increasing number of diaspora players being called up to the national team and language barriers were a major obstacle, considering that Shin did not speak Indonesian or English.

"He cannot speak Indonesian, nor can he speak English. This requires a complex structure involving translators, both Korean-Indonesian and Korean-English, maybe even Indonesian-English," he said.

Azrul also highlighted that during his years working in Indonesia, Shin Tae-yong had not shown any effort to learn Indonesian. He compared this to Indonesian workers in South Korea who are required to understand the local language.

"In this day and age, multilingual skills are inevitable. Especially for positions or jobs that are international in nature. No one can be world class if they cannot be multilingual," he said.

Furthermore, Azrul understands the mindset of the General Chairperson of the All Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir, who is currently designing a new strategy for Indonesian football.

He believes that a large investment in gathering diaspora players requires a coach who is able to communicate directly without language barriers.

"I can understand the mindset of the General Chairperson of PSSI, Bang Erick, and I have a similar mindset. With such a large investment in gathering diaspora players, of course we need a coach who can communicate more directly," he said.

However, Azrul invited all parties to remain optimistic about the future of Indonesian football.

"We all must remain aware that this is the best era in the history of the Indonesian football federation. We must continue to move forward, looking forward," he said.

"We all must move on immediately, and hopefully our football will continue to move up," he said.

On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, PSSI officially announced that it had appointed Dutch coach Patrick Kluivert as the new coach of the Indonesian National Team.
