TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto visited President of Peru Dina Boluarte at the Peru Palace in Lima on Thursday, November 14, 2024. Following an honor ceremony, the two leaders held a private meeting to discuss potential avenues for strengthening cooperation between the two nations.

Subsequently, they joined their respective delegations for bilateral meetings to delve deeper into strategic cooperation across various sectors. After the bilateral meeting, they witnessed the signing of the Visa Exemption Agreement for Holders of Diplomatic and Official Passports.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and Peruvian Foreign Minister Elmer Schialer Salcedo formalized the agreement, which had been under negotiation since May 27-30, 2024, in Lima.

“We hope to forge a robust bilateral relationship and strengthen our ties within the multilateral framework. Indonesia, as a member of ASEAN, remains committed to supporting Peru's participation in ASEAN,” Prabowo said, as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat's statement.

Indonesia and Peru also pledged to finalize a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) within the next six months. Prabowo expressed confidence that the agreement could be signed during Boluarte's upcoming visit to Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Boluarte highlighted the shared characteristics of biodiversity and multiculturalism between Peru and Indonesia. She noted that in 2023, Indonesia emerged as Peru's eighth-largest trading partner in Asia.

“Given the economic strength of our two nations, which are on a path of sustained growth and stable development, there is significant potential for new areas of cooperation,” asserted Boluarte, as reported by the Peruvian Government's Media, Andina.

The meeting between Prabowo and Boluarte also delved into cooperation in illegal drug eradication and alignment of views on the international stage. However, no details were provided on this issue.

According to the latest data from the United States government, Peru is the world's second-largest cocaine producer and coca cultivator, with an estimated 72,000 hectares of coca fields cultivated in 2019. Meanwhile, Indonesia serves as a global drug market. Between 2016 and 2021, the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center recorded drug transactions totaling Rp400 trillion.

A recent example of international drug trafficking in Indonesia involved the smuggling of 5.1 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine through air logistics in Jakarta on December 11, 2023. The illicit substance was concealed within ceramic floor tiles shipped from Mexico.

The Presidential Secretariat's written statement emphasized that as nations bordering the Pacific Ocean, both Indonesia and Peru share a common interest in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
