TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has arrived in Malaysia for a personal visit, landing at the Bunga Raya Complex at Kuala Lumpur International Airport around 10:00 am local time. He is set to meet with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to discuss advancing strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two nations.

According to a statement from the Presidential Secretariat's Press Bureau, President Prabowo was welcomed by Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, Indonesia’s Ambassador to Malaysia Indera Hermono, and Indonesia’s Defense Attaché Brig. Gen. Winarno.

Foreign Minister Sugiono and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya are accompanying President Prabowo on this visit.

"President Prabowo is set to meet with Prime Minister Anwar today. The two leaders will have lunch together and engage in discussions on key global issues, as well as the continued development of our bilateral ties," said Yusuf Permana, the Presidential Secretariat deputy for protocol, press, and media, in a statement on Thursday, January 9.

The last in-person meeting between the two leaders occurred during President Prabowo’s inauguration in October 2024 at the MPR/DPR Building in Jakarta, where Prime Minister Anwar congratulated him directly.

A meeting between President Prabowo and Prime Minister Anwar had initially been scheduled for December 2024. However, it was delayed after President Prabowo fell ill.

In a post on his official X account on December 23, Anwar Ibrahim stated that he and his family were in Langkawi, Malaysia, to host President Prabowo. However, the meeting was postponed due to the President’s health condition.

At the time, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya explained that President Prabowo had to return urgently to Jakarta for a pressing matter. "There was an urgent need in Jakarta, so the President had to return immediately," Teddy stated in a press release on December 23, 2024.

Before attending the D-8 Summit in Cairo, Egypt, President Prabowo had indicated plans to meet Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim after the summit. However, upon completing his visit to Egypt, President Prabowo flew directly to Jakarta, where he convened a limited meeting at Halim Perdanakusuma Airbase to discuss preparations for the upcoming holiday season and disaster management plans.
