TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto attended the inaugural session of the G20 Summit held in Brazil on Monday, November 18, 2024. He commended Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for placing poverty and hunger at the forefront of this year's summit agenda.
In his speech, Prabowo underscored his government's commitment to addressing hunger and poverty as national priorities. He also mentioned the great budgetary allocation for education.
“I believe that education is the key to overcoming poverty. Our free meal programs for children are a crucial part of our strategy to ensure that the younger generation benefits from quality education,” he said.
Before world leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden, Prabowo outlined concrete plans to achieve food and energy security in Indonesia. He expressed optimism about his government's ability to eradicate hunger within the next three years.
In addition to food and energy issues, he highlighted the link between global economic issues and geopolitical dynamics. He called for peaceful resolutions to ongoing conflicts, such as those in Ukraine and Gaza, and urged G20 member countries to strengthen multilateral cooperation in addressing these global challenges.
“We urge an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and Gaza. Only through peace and stability can we hope to overcome poverty and hunger,” Prabowo declared.
G20 leaders engaged in discussions on proposals to alleviate poverty, foster solidarity among developing countries, and reform global institutions. Prabowo participated in two sessions: "Fight against Hunger and Poverty" and "Reform of the Institutions of Global Governance."
The G20 Summit commenced with the launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty initiative at the Museum of Modern Art, led by Lula. In his speech, the Brazilian President drew attention to global social inequalities, noting that 733 million people still suffered from malnutrition in 2024, despite the world's annual food production of nearly 6 billion tons.
“Hunger is a biological expression of a social disease,” Lula emphasized, quoting the renowned Brazilian scientist Josué de Castro.
